How many times have you heard “two heads are better than one”?  The fact that your gut is often referred to as your second brain should be good news!!  By healing your gut, you can potentially improve your entire body, from mood to memory, vitamin and mineral absorbency, hormone regulation, digestion, vitamin production, immune response, and your ability to eliminate toxins.

Do you experience any of these common symptoms related to poor gut health?

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating after meals
  • Acid reflux
  • Flatulence
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain
  • Compromised immune system

What can you do about it?

Traditionally, when you have a stomach ache, the first thing you might grab is an antacid to help with bloating, gas, and reflux.  What most people don’t realize is that as you age your production of hydrochloric acid production decreases, causing hypochlorhydria (hypo=low, chlorhydria=stomach acid); which means if you are taking an acid blocker, you could be making things worse

Home remedies

You can correct your low stomach acid by eating a balanced diet of wholesome foods and by reducing your daily levels of stress. Niacin, vitamin B3, zinc, and digestive bitters stimulate HCl production. These can be taken before meals, as can magnesium chloride and pyridoxal-5-phosphate (the active form of vitamin B6), to help stimulate your body’s own HCl. Another easy home remedy is to drink the juice of half a lemon squeezed in water or a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water 20–30 minutes before meals. Homemade teas such as rosemary, ginger, cumin, or orange peel, drunk before meals can also be helpful.

 Gut bugs

Eeew!  Yep, we all have bugs in our guts. Does the thought of having bugs in your gut give you the creeps?  As in nature, there are good and bad bugs. The key is to learn which ones are the good guys and get rid of the bad guys.  Excess bad bugs = dysbiosis, or an imbalance of good vs bad bugs.

It’s all a matter of balance.  When was the last time your doctor sent you for a gut microbiome test? WHAT??  How else do you find out what’s in your gut?  The next time you visit your doctor due to abdominal pain, gas, and bloating after meals, acid reflux, headaches, fatigue, joint pain, or compromised immune system, ask him/her to order the following test from BioHealth Labs – GI PathogeHn w/. pylori Antigen – 401H.
