Cancer and Children, the SAD Connection: Are Raw and Living Foods Part of the Solution?

Written by Ritamarie Loscalzo on December 11, 2009 – -

It’s always sad to hear about a child who’s suffering and dying from cancer.  It’s heartbreaking, actually.  Such a waste of a life, to be stricken down so young.  And what a painful experience for a parent…to lose a child is the worst nightmare of every parent.

Yet it happens every day, and it is frustrating to no end to observe the scenario.  As you may recall, I lost my sister to cancer just over a year ago, and I watched in horror as they tore her immune system to shreds with the drugs, foods and treatments, in the hope that they could kill the cancer.  She, like most cancer patients, died from the treatment, not the disease.

How can you expect a body to heal from cancer when it’s fed hospital food…white bread, milk, sugar, canned vegetables and bottled fruit juice.  None of the food has life, and as such it has no ability to create life, or save life.  It has only the power to destroy life.

This post was prompted by the story of a young boy named Dominic.  I met his mom, Elaina Love, for the first time earlier this year, and again just a few weeks ago when she came to Austin to teach a class on how to make holiday meals that are life giving, in place of  the holiday typical menu, containing foods that are life depleting.

ElainanDominic Cancer and Children, the SAD Connection: Are Raw and Living Foods Part of the Solution?

Elaina and Dominic

I cried as I read this story and I’m tearing up again as I recount it.  I have a son who’s around the same age, and the thought of losing him is unbearable.   As I read Dominic and Elaina’s story, I couldn’t help but put myself into her shoes, and feel the intensity of the pain she is experiencing.

Dominic, age 14,  became ill with leukemia earlier this year, and much to Elaina’s anguish, Dominic and his dad decided to put their trust in mainstream medicine — chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant.  All the while, he continued to eat the food served in the hospital, and the foods he and his dad chose, rather than follow Elaina’s recommendations of green foods, wheat grass juice and no sugar.

They thought it was successful until November 25, 2009 when the doctors  told them the leukemia was back and more aggressive than ever.  There was nothing more that mainstream medicine could offer Dominic, except to keep him comfortable as they waited for him to die.  Their estimate was that he had between 1 week and 1 month to remain on the planet.

Finally, Dominic and his dad agreed to follow Elaina’s advice and take him to the  Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida,  where they are famous for helping people to heal from cancer and where people go when they have no other choice.  There Dominic will eat a completely green raw diet consisting of juices and greens, get daily wheatgrass implants , oxygen therapy and other non conventional therapies that the institute has to offer.  It is their last hope.

Before leaving for Hippocrates, Elaina took Dominic off everything that feeds cancer-    sugar, fruit, bread, dairy, pastries, salt, caffeine, meat, and everything that is served on he hospital cafeteria trays sent to his room three times a day.   He started consuming liquid blue green algae, wheat grass , green juice ,  cucumbers, avocado, lettuce, red bell peppers and only raw, vegan foods that contain no sugar.  They stopped the IV, which contained sugar water.

Elaina and Dominic have been at Hippocrates for about 10 days now, and Elaina reports that he seems to be getting stronger.  Only time will tell.  You can follow Dominic’s progress on Elaina’s blog, at http://elainalove.wordpress.com/

The therapy and airfare combined are going to be close to $20,000 for the first 3 weeks.   Drs Brian and Ann Marie Clement are offering a partial scholarship and there is a donation fund being set up.

You can help in a several ways:

1- Keep Dominic and Elaina in your thoughts and prayers.  Send healing energy in their direction.

2- Donate, even $5!

http://www.purejoyplanet.com/store/index.php?cPath=26

Any help you can send their way would be  so great.

3- Shop at Elaina’s website. Christmas and Hanukkah are coming up.  Buy a gift for yourself or your loved ones. Buy Elaina’s books, DVDs, e-books, or a nut milk bag or Irish Moss.

http://purejoyplanet.com/store/

I bought her cultured foods DVD, that includes how to make kefir, saurkraut sour dough crackers, yogurt and more, her Irish moss e-book, Flavors of China e-book, and  vanilla, cherry and hazelnut essential oils. Plus I donated $25!  Everything helps.

Elaina Love is a professional Chef and Instructor, Lifestyle Counselor and Owner/Director of the raw food store and Pure Joy Planet. She authored the raw, vegan, living food recipe book Elaina’s Pure Joy Kitchen.  She is the creator of the Amazing Nut Milk Bag.

Elaina has been teaching raw food courses worldwide since 1998. She is a Chef/Instructor at the renowned Living Light Culinary Arts Institute where she has been on staff since 2000.

Here’s what Elaina has to say:

“It is my life purpose to help people be as healthy, feel full of life force and joy that they can be, and I have helped soooo many people through my teachings, recipes, personal example and website. My family, however, from my son to my ex to my parents, have never wanted to embrace raw foods, and in fact shun it at all costs.

I got over it a long time ago and didn’t give it much thought anymore. But when Dom got cancer in Jan of 2009, my world turned upside down. I wanted so badly to help him with raw foods, but he and his dad just wouldn’t bite (literally and figuratively). So even though I begged, cried and pleaded, they opted for the traditional medical route.

And after awhile my initial rage filled resistance was  kept under wraps to protect my son, and spirit told me to surrender and go along with what they had chosen, so I did and embrace it I did, with every fiber of my being hoping with all my heart that it would work.

I have been told by higher power that it’s going to be one of those miracle stories, where instead of the boy getting the girl, he gets the rest of his life…healthy, happy, cancer free and no drugs (the girl comes later)!”

Donations have been pouring in to help Dominic, and Elaina  to pay for the expensive treatment at Hippocrates, for which insurance will not pay even a penny.  Overwhelmed by the generosity.  Se says”The gratitude I feel for you as I write this, even though I don’t know who you are yet, is so huge I want to cry”.

Let this story serve as a wake up call.  Your children, our children, the children of the planet, NEED to be fed whole fresh foods, not the packaged, refined, cancer-causing fare served in schools, restaurants and most people’s homes.

We need to wake up, as a culture, to the fact that nature has its “laws“.  Just as you can’t defy gravity, you can’t defy your body’s nutritional needs, feed yourself and your family toxic foods, and expect to be healthy.

Over 40% of the US population will get cancer. A large percentage of those WILL die from it.  And these numbers are going up.  The only way to put yourself and your loved ones on the “safe” side of the fence is to throw all the cancer causing foods and chemicals over the fence, and as far away from you as possible.

It’s painful to lose someone you love.  It’s even more painful when you lose them to a preventable illness, as I lost my parents then my younger sister.  Make a commitment today to, as Gandhi said, to  ” be the change you want to see in the world”.  Create vibrant health for you AND your loved ones, one bite at a time.  Whatever the temporary pleasure attained from eating SAD food, it’s tainted by the long term suffering of cancer.

Get support if you need it.  Surround yourself by like minded people who care about their health.  Get a mentor and make a commitment to your health, your family’s health and the health of the planet.  Dare to make unpopular decisions, and you’ll live to tell about it.

Love, Health and Joy,

Dr. Ritamarie

Halloween Hazards and Healthy Halloween Treats

Written by Ritamarie Loscalzo on October 30, 2009 – -

halloween Halloween Hazards and Healthy Halloween Treats

Halloween is a fun holiday, especially for kids. My teenage son, Eric has been to several haunted houses with his friends and spent hours at a costume store, picking out just the right mask.

My preteen son, Kevin, loves trick or treating and eagerly anticipates what’s going to be in his goodie bag…the one I’ll trade him for the candy he collects.

Even though we don’t eat candy, and we end up throwing away all the candy collected at Hal loween, the kids still have a blast!

We have our own rituals and festivities after the trick or treating is over. Trick or treating is a social event. They used to just collect money for UNICEF, but after a while they got tired of telling the well-meaning adults “No thanks” on the candy and started coming home with bags full. At first they thought they could just give it to their friends. Then they realized that they liked their friends too much to add to the already too large a strain on their immune systems and decided it best to throw it away. Wasteful??? Not hardly. Every piece we throw away is one less that some one eats and that saves them hours of a depressed immune system.

You see, sugar depresses the immune system. It’s been measured to decrease the activity of the T-cells, the “protector cells” by as much as 50% for 4 hours after just 2 teaspoons of sugar. Your typical soft drink contains 8 teaspoons.

With all the fear of the flu going around these days, isn’t it nice to know that there is an easy way to support your immune system and protect yourself and your kids from the flu? Supporting their immune system naturally is far more effective than any flu vaccine….and much safer. I held a special “emergency” immune system support and flu prevention teleclass at the beginning of the month. The recordings are available at http://drritamarie.com/FluProtection-TeleClass-SignUp.php

A Nobel prize winning researcher named Otto Warberger showed the connection between sugar and cancer back in the 1930′s! Sugar’s adverse effects can be seen throughout your body. Here’s a passage abut sugar from my new book, Healthy Halloween Treats

halloween print book Halloween Hazards and Healthy Halloween Treats

“Sugar can also impair the structure of DNA, cause hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and crankiness in children, weaken eyesight, contribute to eczema, interfere with the absorption of protein, decrease the activity of your T cells, which contributes to the reduction in defense against bacterial infection, contribute to Candida (yeast) infections and contribute to osteoporosis. “

There are more little known facts about sugar in Healthy Halloween Treats, as well as healthier alternatives to the candy and cupcakes and other harmful foods that are usually associated with Halloween.

Junk food doesn’t just promote tooth decay and hyperactivity. It is life-threatening!! Here are some statistics from Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a “radical” medical doctor who treats his patients with broccoli and other fresh fruits and vegetables.

“The CDC estimates that 1/3 of children born in 2000 will develop type 2 diabetes in their lifetime, and that children born in 2000candy corn Halloween Hazards and Healthy Halloween Treats may not outlive their parents.  Overweight/obesity rates have doubled among children and tripled among adolescents in the past 20 years. Obesity in children increases their risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, asthma, joint problems, sleep apnea, early puberty, and several cancers. Signs of atherosclerosis can be seen in early childhood. Most adult cancers are linked to poor childhood nutrition. Sugar contributes to violence. 69% of the 10 year olds who were violent at the age of 34 had eaten sweets and chocolate nearly every day during childhood, compared to 42% who were non-violent.”

As a parent or an adult responsible for the nutrition of a child, you have the responsibility to educate yourself. Allowing your children to indulge in junk food sets them up for childhood illnesses, cancers, and poor quality life. As parents, you must take control of your children’s health! You must set a good example and protect them from the dangers of indulging in the Halloween sweets and treats that are harming them.

For more information on the health risks the modern western diet imposes on kids, read Dr. Fuhrman’s book Disease Proof Your Child

It’s sad how much misinformation abounds. The American Academy of Family Physicians is clueless about counseling parents about healthy diet for kids. They just announced a corporate sponsorship with Coca-Cola to develop their consumer education content on to beverages and sweeteners for their health and wellness web site, FamilyDoctor.org. Coca-Cola is certainly not going to include the information about how dangerous soft drinks are, will they? How can you trust your family physician if their association is getting its nutrition education from CocaCola? According to Dr. Fuhrman, on his blog , Disease Proof the American Dietetic Association also accepts money from Coca-Cola, as well as from PepsiCo, Kellogg’s, General Mills, Mars and the National Dairy Council.

I know it’s hard to say no to your favorite holiday goodies. Yet you owe it to yourself and your family to learn the cold hard facts and act on them. In Healthy Halloween Treats I give you all you need to maintain the joy and playfulness of the holiday and keep it nutritious and safe at the same time. Try some banana ghosts, chocolate covered apples, chocolate spiders or swampsicles. Your kids will love it and they’ll thank you when they realize later how much pain and suffering you saved them by making healthy choices for them.

Happy Halloween.

Is Sunscreen Increasing Your Risk of Cancer?

Written by Ritamarie Loscalzo on August 16, 2009 – -

Perhaps you’ve been brainwashed by the media about the dangers of the sun and how important it is to wear sunscreen every time you go outdoors. My son was told in health class that he should NEVER go outdoors unless he’s wearing sunscreen, even at night, because the UV light can “Get Him” even in the dark.  Being a saavy health information consumer, he argued with the teacher, explaining to her the importance of daily sun exposure for adequate Vitamin D production.  She, of course, wasn’t buying the information, especially since the source was a fifteen year old.

Perhaps she’ll change her tune if she watches  the following videos from reputable sources…MSNBC and the University of California Medical School.    Maybe some of the references below from medical journals will be convincing.    According to Dr. Cedric Garland of UC Medical School, about 50,000 cases per year of breast cancer and  and 51,000 cases of colon cancer can be prevented by maintaining adequate blood levels of Vitamin D.

How do you get adequate blood levels of Vitamin D?  Daily sun exposure is the best way.  When you can’t get sun exposure, a vitamin D supplement is prudent.

Everyone who uses sunscreen or spends most of the day indoors should get a vitamin D blood test.  Based on Dr. Garland’s Research, the ideal blood level of vitamin D for cancer prevention is between 50 and 60 ng/dl.

For details about how Vitamin D and sunshine work, watch this very entertaining video by Dr. Michael F. Hollick, an MD researcher from Boston.  His slides are humorous, his presentation style fun and his information sound.  I disagree with drinking 3 glasses of milk a day, but most of the other recommendations make a lot of sense.  His website http://www.vitamindhealth.org/ is a wealth of information.

Another good source of Vitamin D research is Dr. Mercola.  I particularly enjoyed the research that linked washing with soap and sunlight exposure through windows to Vitamin D deficiency.

Finally, there’s the issue of the safety of sunscreen.  There have actually been studies that report an increased risk of cancer with the use of sunscreen because of carcinogenic compounds like benzophenone or its derivatives (oxybenzone, benzophenone-3), found in most sunscreens.  Benzophenone is one of the most powerful free radical generators known to man and it’s activated by ultraviolet light.  For more info about the link between sunscreen and cancer, visit

http://www.vvv.com/healthnews/dsunscre.html

If you’d like to really get into the technical details and cancer statistics, as well as the proposed mechanism by which Vitamin is believed to prevent cancer, take a look at this video by Dr. Cedric Garland  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PsyaYNX1dw

Effects of Raw Cruciferous Vegetables on Thyroid and Cancer Prevention

Written by Ritamarie Loscalzo on August 15, 2009 – -

I just watched an excellent video about the effects of cruceriferous vegetables like broccoli and kale on thyroid health.  It was posted on Kevin Gianni’s Renegade Health Show blog.

Here’s the link to the show, followed by my comments.

http://renegadehealth.com/blog/the-real-effect-of-raw-cruciferous-vegetables-on-the-thyroid

My comments:

I’ve been studying thyroid issues for a long time and an exhaustive study of hundreds of medline research papers lead me to the same conclusion as Kevin.  Most of the studies on the goitrogenic effect of isothyocyanate used an isolated extract not cruciferous vegetables.  And even with large doses of isolates, the effects on the thyroid were reversed by adding iodine to the animal’s diet.  I recommend that people who include a lot of crucifers especially in smoothies add a teaspoon of powdered sea vegetables to their smoothies, salad dressings or sprinkled on their food.  By doing this, many of my patients have dramatically improved their TSH levels (see below) in as little as 3 months.  Certain species of kelp, especially laminaria digitata (available from Maine Coast Sea Vegetables seaveg.com) have been shown to contain preformed T3 and T4 (the thyroid hormones).  Dr. Ryan Drum has a couple of really good, very detailed articles on this on his website)

Many good points were raised in the discussion, and many great questions asked.  I’d like to address a few:
1- what’s the best test for thyroid.  The medical standard is TSH, although the range used by most labs miss many cases.  The TSH range should be between 1.5 and 3.2.  Sometimes the TSH comes within the normal range even when thyroid symptoms are present.  Taking the first morning temperature, often called basal body temperature, is a good way to determine if the thyroid is low.

2- Just adding iodine will not reverse hypothyroid unless the condition is specifically related to an iodine deficiency.  Thyroid has many causes.  I addressed these at Raw Spirit Fest in 2008.  A copy of my presentation, along with several other e-books on greens is available for FREE at http://www.drritamarie.com/green

3- A lot of hypothyroidism is not primarily a thyroid problem, but is related to adrenal stress or adrenal insufficiency, cause by chronic stress.  This type of thyroid problem responds well to stress management and diet and lifestyle change.  I have a few articles on adrenal fatigue on my blog… http://www.drritamarie.com/blog

Thanks again Kevin for exploring these important issues.

Raw and Living Foods For Optimal Health: Meeting of the minds at Raw Spirit Fest

Written by Ritamarie Loscalzo on June 9, 2009 – -

As I write these words, I’m sitting in “food court” area at Raw Spirit Fest getting ready to make my departure.  The “food court” is a dream come true.  My vision is for each and every mall in America to have such a food court, filled with delicious foods that enhance health rather than detract from it as typical food court fare does.

It’s been an inspiring and fun weekend.

I’ve met some amazing souls…united with a common mission.

Everyone who came together here is dedicated to improving their own health, the health and the planet an the health of all with whom they come in contact.

We hear of health practitioners referred to as healers.  When you
refer to another as a healer, you are giving over your power to that person, when, in fact, the true healer is inside you.

There are all sorts of opinions, opinions stated as fact and myths related to healing and wellness.   The truth is that health comes from healthy living.  What does healthy living consist of?  There in often lies the confusion.  I contest that it is easier than you think.

At the festival, practitioners and teachers from many disciplines came together with “ordinary people” to discuss their approach, beliefs and practices.

It would be easy to become confused.  Some touted the amazing health benefits of raw chocolate.  Others proclaimed it a health hazard.  Fruit is good for you. Fruit promotes cancer. Fermented foods are full of health benefits.  Fermented foods are rotting decay.  Who do you believe?  What do you believe?

As I said above, true health follows as a result of healthful living.

I’ll be starting a series of articles on my blog to discuss the controversy about what constitutes healthy living.  I’ll lend not yet another opinion (mine) but a way for you to sort through it all and make the decisions that are best for you in each and every moment.

Subscribe to the blog, Okay?  That way you won’t miss the a single life changing post.

Love, Health and Joy,

Dr. Ritamarie

P.S. Please comment below .  Tell me one thing you do EVERY day to promote your health.  Thanks

Comfort Foods Raw Vegan Style: Foods that Nourish and Energize

Written by Ritamarie Loscalzo on May 28, 2009 – -

german carob cake Comfort Foods Raw Vegan Style: Foods that Nourish and EnergizeBeing tired is one of those emotional triggers that can lead you down a path of poor food choices,  emotional alienation and lack of joy.

Turning to diet as part of the solution is definitely worth consideration, especially since the most common foods in America and the Western World are energy depleting and contribute to chronic fatigue and degenerative disease.

If you’re like most people, you desire the outcome that a healthy lifestyle offers, yet you crave the comfort foods of your past.

My most successful patients, students and clients are the ones who learn to recreate their favorite comfort foods in new ways…ways that support their health rather than deplete it.

As part of the Fatigue Freedom Formula that I teach, I recommend creating your healthy living toolkit.  One of the “tools” in the kit is a collection of delicious and satisfying recipes.  My  e-books contain  such recipes and many of my patients and students report that using these gluten free raw and living foods recipes has helped them to make healthier choices on a more consistent basis, and as a result overcome the fatigue issues that prevent them from fully living their lives.

Even more powerful than reading and following recipes is attending a live workshop.  During my classes, participants not only watch and taste the delicious foods created right before their eyes, but they also get to participate and make foods of their own.

greens Comfort Foods Raw Vegan Style: Foods that Nourish and EnergizeOne of the most important food groups is greens.  Including them as a large part of your daily diet not only enhances your energy and can help reverse adrenal fatigue, but protects you from cancer as well.  Greens can be incorporated into a variety of comfort foods, from chips to desserts.  Have you ever tried Kale Spirulina Brownies?

I am excited to be hosting a class on Tuesday June 2, 2009 with Jackie and Gideon Graff of Georgia.  They’ll be preparing a 6 course meal of Country Barbecue style fare.  The class will be live in Austin, Texas and will be also webcast, so you can participate from around the globe!

If you come to the live class, you’ll be rewarded with a 6 course meal!  I’m excited to be hosting the Graffs.  The were the owners of the Sprout Cafe in Atlanta, until they decided to take their show on the road and teach their delicious cuisine while travelling in their RV.

You can find out more about the class and the Graffs at my website on the Classes page. I’m looking forward to the experience of the Country Barbecue Living Foods Class with Gideon and Jackie Graff

How Do YOU Protect Yourself From Cancer?

Written by Ritamarie Loscalzo on May 27, 2009 – -

Cancer effects an alarming 42% of Americans, and that number is on the rise.  That’s a scary statistic, isn’t it?

Would you like to be another statistic, or would you rather  shift your odds in favor of cancer prevention rather than cancer promotion?
dsci0353 1024x768 How Do YOU Protect Yourself From Cancer?
Diets high in red meat and low in green vegetables are associated with increased colon cancer risk. This according to the Journal of Carcinogenesis.

Green vegetables have been shown to have cancer protective effects when eaten regularly and in significant amounts.

In particular,  broccoli sprouts have been linked to protection from just about evbroccoli sprouts How Do YOU Protect Yourself From Cancer?ery kind of cancer known to modern science.  There are studies showing a protective effect in regards to stomach cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, and skin cancer.  Apparently they contain a compound called sulforaphane, which protects cells from injury.

Other greens in the brassica family are also cancer protective.  Cabbage has been shown to protect against breast cancer as a result of compounds called glucosinolates and an enzyme called myrosinase.

So what other benefits do greens have? Well, they are packed with nutrients, especially vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium, iron, zinc, folate, lutein, beta carotene, chlorophyll and protein.  Yes, protein.  Greens contain a large percentage of calories as protein.  For example, broccoli is over 50% protein.

Green vegetables are the food most missing from modern diets, even those considered among the healthiest.    The standard American diet is approximately 5% greens.  A healthy percentage is considered to be close to 50%, which is about what chimpanzees eat.

Green vegetables have many life giving properties.   In addition to cancer protection, greens strengthen the blood and immune systems, and fight depression naturally by supplying a plethora of nutrients needed to make neurotransmitters.

The fiber in raw greens help to keep the digestive tract moving, and many people report that greens are energy-giving foods, increasing mental clarity and sustaining energy.  Foods in the brassica family…broccoli, kale, mustard greens, cauliflower, and cabbage, have been shown to speed the liver’s ability to detoxify ingested toxins.

Do YOU eat enough greens?

Studies show that those who eat greens daily are overall healthier than those who don’t.

Would you like to learn creative and fun ways to include more greens in your daily diet?  I’ve teamed up with Chef Alicia Ojeda to bring you the most comprehensive class on greens available.

In this class we’ll teach you you many ways to include the greens in your diet, including salads, soups, dips, dressings, marinades, slaws, roll-ups, smoothies and desserts.  YES DESSERTS!  You CAN make delicious deserts that include greens!  We’ll give you he scoop on sea vegetables, the richest mineral source of all, and show you delicious and easy ways to prepare them.

http://www.drritamarie.com/GreenClass

(One of my favorite ways to eat greens is kale chips, which we’ll teach you in this class. ) The kale brownies are amazing, too!!!.

Here’s the details.

http://www.drritamarie.com/GreenClass

This class will be presented live and in person, with a hands on sprouting segment, and broadcast over the web as well.

I hope you can join us in person on June 14, but if you can’t, sign up for the webcast and recordings.

Special pricing applies until June 1, and you’ll get access to the recordings of the webcast if you attend the live class.

Health, Travel and Cancer Resources

Written by Ritamarie Loscalzo on January 26, 2009 – -

I’ve been traveling and so busy that I couldn’t fit the time in to write a blog post until now.  I have a long list of topics to cover  and will be getting into a regular groove very soon.

I attended a very impactful business retreat this past week and the breakthroughs I had will be reflected in my writing, image and work over the months to come.  It’s very exciting.

My retreat was followed by delightful time with family.  One of my sisters and one of my brothers live here in Tucson and I have had a busy time visiting with them.  My 1 year old grand nephew Jason had a very healthful eating day as Aunt Ritamarie fed him a tropical green smoothie, almond milk and a sunflower seed veggie pate, kind of like a mock tuna salad.  He loved it.

My 10 year old nephew Anthony ate 2 helpings of salad, tried the tropical smoothie and got excited when I told him he could make spaghetti out of zucchini using the spiralizer I gave them as a Christmas gift.

Spiral Slicer Saladacco – Make Pasta out of Vegetables Health, Travel and Cancer Resources

I made a yummy sesame ginger kelp noodle dish for dinner.  It is a gluten free, raw food antidote for fatigue, with all of its minerals and phytochemicals.   I promise the recipe and others will be posted soon.

On a sad note, I’d like to pay tribute to our dear friend Noah, age 15, who left his worldly form behind yesterday after a  3 month battle with cancer.  Our hearts reach out to his grieving family as they feel the pain of  such a loss.

Cancer unfortunately effects 42 percent of the population.  I’ve read a couple of good books lately on cancer prevention and management.  These are listed below:

Creating Health in 2009: Updating Your Relationship with Food to Bullet-Proof Yourself Against Disease

Written by Ritamarie Loscalzo on January 1, 2009 – -

Today we welcome in a new year. It’s a time for dreaming, visioning and creating a plan for making your life what you want it to be. Don’t let fear and uncertainty stop you from pursuing your dream. Don’t have a dream? Now’s the time to do some soul searching and discover your passion. What is it that juices you more than anything? What would you do night and day just for fun that you can turn into your life’s work? There’s a book called The Passion Test, by Janet and Chris Attwood that can help you to identify your true passion and begin to live your life to its fullest.

While it feels like the year 2008 literally flew by, and I certainly did not complete all the projects I had  planned, as I look back and reflect upon the events of the past 12 months, I am awed by the many changes and accomplishments that I’ve experienced in such a short time. Some of my 2008 experiences were very painful. Others were fulfilling and rewarding.

I spent an emotional afternoon on New Years Eve, one which, like many of the other events of 2008, reinforced to me the importance of my life’s mission.

As cancer and surgery touched my life quite intimately this year, I began to really appreciate both the gift of health and its fragile nature as well.

I watched helplessly as my younger sister Cathy was diagnosed with lymphoma, which took her life within 3 months.

I so wanted to guide her back to health, but my approach of diet and lifestyle change was so foreign to her and the medical approach felt so safe that she turned her care over to the hospital staff and closed herself off from alternatives. I felt angry and betrayed by their ignorance of basic nutritional science.

During my 8 day round the clock stay at Cathy’s bedside, I learned with horror how little the medical staff actually knows about restoring health. They are masters at the mechanics of repairing broken body parts, cutting out unwanted growths, and stitching things back together. But when it comes to rebuilding the broken immune system, balancing body chemistry to safeguard against disease and strengthening the body, mind and spirit, they are seriously lagging in technology.

My experience this afternoon brought me back to the frustration I felt at Cathy’s bedside. I spent the day at the bedside of a 15 year old boy, a good friend battling for his life against cancer. He’s had the surgery, chemo and radiation and his parents decided to take him home and build his immune system using alternative therapies, such as Qi Gong, energy healing and nutrition.

The family set up a hospital bed in the dining room and are providing round the clock care for their son. He’s on a feeding tube that goes directly into the small intestine, and he was prescribed a pre-packaged nutritional formula, the same one as my sister was prescribed. The ingredients confirm a complete lack of understanding of the digestive process and nutritional needs of a cancer patient. With such ingredients as corn syrup, canola and corn oils and soy and milk protein, all implicated in the causation of cancer, how can a cancer patient be expected to rebuild and repair?

My friend and I are brainstorming other options, like wheat grass juice, E3 Live and green juices, and we’reconsulting with an expert in the area of cancer nutrition, Dr. Thomas Lodi in Arizona. I am so inspired by the videos on his site.

I also suggested that they try the Healing Codes, an energy system developed by Dr. Alex Loyd and promoted by Dr. Ben Johnson, MD, NMD, DO. They have lots of testimonials from people who’ve been helped with cancers of various types.

While it’s nice to know that there are doctors who specialize in helping people with cancer to restore their health, like Dr’s Lodi, Loyd and Johnson, and many others, including Dr. Brian Clement at the Hippocrates Institute in Florida, I’d much rather see you prevent cancer in the first place. It’s easier to build your immune system and create a fortress to protect you from cancer than to treat it after it takes hold.

I for one am tired of seeing my close friends and family members becoming afflicted with cancer and other debilitating diseases. This year has been a challenge for me as I watched close friends and family members deal with lymphoma, sinus cancer, breast cancer, a brain tumor, depression, diabetes, lupus and substance abuse. Many of these and other serious health challenges can be prevented and reversed through dietary and lifestyle balance.

A diet high in greens and living foods is a great starting point, along with balancing body chemistry through  targeted nutritional supplementation, herbs and energy work.  It helps to get coached by a trained practitioner, knowledgable about the medical science, nutritional biochemistry and fresh, whole foods diet.

Adrenal fatigue, fibromyalgia, depression, autoimmune disorders and cancer can all be prevented through diet and lifestyle, including exercise, positive attitude,  a gluten free diet, lots of greens and raw and living foods.

It’s estimated that more than one in three people will get cancer during their lives. Don’t wait to become a statistic. Stop disease before it starts. I’ll be posting a series of videos, audios and written materials over the next few weeks to help you bullet proof your immune system. They are part of my soon to be announced Stepping Stones to Vibrant Health Program.
