Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo interviews Dr. Valter Longo about his book “The Longevity Diet”.

During the interview, they discussed the benefits of water fasting as compared to what Dr. Longo calls the “Fasting Mimicking Diet”.  The Fasting Mimicking Diet allows people the benefits of fasting while allowing them to continue with normal life activities.

Dr. Longo’s studies have shown profound benefits of the Fasting Mimicking Diet in conditions such as heart disease, autoimmune disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Highlights

  1. A healthy person would benefit from using the Fasting Mimicking Diet a couple times a year.
  2. If you are experiencing health issues, using the Fasting Mimicking Diet once a month can be extremely beneficial in the healing process.
  3. Daily fasting for 12 – 13 hours creates an environment conducive to healing.
  4. In Dr. Longo’s opinion, a plant-based diet that optionally includes fish a couple of times a week seems to be ideal.
  5. You don’t need nearly as much protein as most people think. In fact, too much protein is detrimental.  In his opinion .36 grams per pound of protein is ideal.

Dr. Valter LongoValter Longo, PhD, is the Edna Jones Professor in Gerontology and Professor in Biological Science at USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. He is also the Director of the USC Longevity Institute. He is interested in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of aging in yeast, mice and humans by using genetics and biochemistry techniques. He is also interested in identifying the molecular pathways conserved from simple organisms to humans that can be modulated to protect against multiple stresses and treat or prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease and other diseases of aging. The focus is on the signal transduction pathways that regulate resistance to oxidative damage in yeast and mice.
