Tip of the Week:
Power up your breakfast!

Start your day right with an omega rich, nutrient dense breakfast. Chia porridge provides omega 3 fats, important for immune system, heart, lungs, and energy.

Green smoothies or juices with added sea veggies provide all the nutrients you need to use the omega 3 fats and create energy.

 More Traveling, Empowering Events

Hi Health-Seeker,

I am rushing around today to get everything I need done before leaving town again. This time I get to see my son, Eric, who has been away at college for over 2 months, my cousin Marybeth, who I haven’t seen in  years (we grew up together), my friend Michelle, whose daughter is having a Bat Mitzvah (she and my son Kevin were in Montessori school together when they were very young)  and possibly my brother, niece and nephews!  All in 5 Days. Plus, I am attending Teresa Tapp’s fitness conference!

I just finished a live call with the VITAL Community where I shared a presentation about omega fats, and the importance of the “Right Ratio of Omega 3 to 6.  It was well received.

I love putting together empowering talks.  I did one for this week’s radio show that addresses the dynamic hormone trio of adrenal, thyroid and insulin, and how they all interact to bring you health or can leave you feeling tired, depressed, cold and out of sorts.

There are some inspirational and empowering events coming up – one hosted by Ocean and John Robbins about the ever important issue of GMOs, one with a dear friend who helps couples get pregnant when they are struggling, and another that empowers women to go for it and start the business of their dreams, even if they are in midlife!

Thanks to Nina, Ocean, John and Bridgit for their gift to the world.

And thanks to You for being dedicated to your own health and well being.  It brings me joy to serve you!

Enjoy todays newsletter – and be sure to join me on Thursday evening for the Kick Off call for my B4 Be Gone Program.  Learn insider secrets and a 30 day strategy to balance blood sugar and banish belly fat, brain fog and burnout!

7 Simple Strategies to Reduce Stubborn Belly Fat and Persistent Brain Fog

Brain fog and belly fat are complaints I hear often in my practice.  In fact, I think they are almost epidemic.

In my experience, the most common cause of both is stress.  When you experience stressful situations, your adrenal glands take action to protect you and ready you to fight or get away.

After all, in the olden days, the biggest stress you might encounter was being chased by a hungry tiger.  Your adrenal glands secrete adrenaline, a neurotransmitter that creates a high level of stimulation to your system and causes your nervous system to operate from what’s known as a sympathetic dominant state.  It also secretes a hormone called cortisol.

Adrenaline is short lived.  As soon as the perceived stress dissipates, it decreases.  Cortisol lasts a lot longer.  Some of the effects of cortisol create the phenomenon of excess belly fat and brain fog.  Cortisol causes fat to be released from storage and turned into sugar…which is a very good thing if you’re running away from a tiger.  It also causes you to become more efficient at burning fat for energy – you’re not going to be able to refuel while in pursuit by a hungry animal.

However, most modern day stressors don’t require physical exertion.  Getting stuck in traffic, financial concerns, an over demanding boss, juggling children’s activities and needs and all of our modern day stressors are all non physical.  Thus when your fat stores are released and turned into sugar, the lack of physical exertion creates an increase in your blood sugar levels, which causes extra insulin to be released.  The extra sugar then gets converted back into fat.

Boosting Testosterone with Olive Oil

Over the weekend I attended the Restorative Medicine Conference and met functional  medicine legends like Doctors Jonathan Wright, David Brownstein and Joseph Pizzorno.

There were a lot of hormone related sessions and a few tidbits stuck out in my mind.

One was the use of olive oil to raise testosterone levels.

We often read about olives and olive oil as tasty additions to food, with somewhat neutral effects on health. There’s a growing body of evidence pointing to its role in balancing testosterone levels.

One study done in rats found that those fed oleuropein, a phenolic compound found in extra virgin olive oil, significantly raised testosterone levels and increased luteinizing hormone levels.  — J Nutr Biochem, 2013 May: 24(5) 887-93

Dr. Jonathan Wright reviewed studies using olive oil to increase levels of 3 beta adiol,  a testosterone metabolite found to protect from cancer by reducing the growth of established tumors and counteracting metastasis.
Hurtado de catalfo, GE et al, Dietary lipids modify homeostasis and steroidogenic status in rat testis. Nutrition 2008:24:717-726

I love using food as medicine.  It’s nature at her best.
