Teaching, Learning and Traveling

Hi Health-Seeker,

My arm is getting stronger and more mobile every day.  Thanks for all the well wishes!

We have lots to share with you this week. I am participating in several telesummits over the next couple of weeks. The topics are actually a little unusual for me.  Check them out in the Dr. Ritamarie recommends column.

If you haven’t already registered for our brand new webinar5 Cutting Edge Strategies to Balance Your Blood Sugar and Say Bye-Bye to Belly Fat, Brain Fog, and Burnout!“, please join over 1100 who have already received 3 of the 5 bonus videos. Video 3 was just released today.

My feature article is on one of my favorite topics – gluten.  Giving up gluten changed my life – and the lives of many people I’ve coached to let it go. Read the article and learn why.

Finally, I am excited to begin a big month of travel.  I’ll be in seminars in  San Francisco, San Diego and Tampa Florida (where I will get to see my son)  then heading to North Carolina for a friend’s daughter's Bat Mitzvah.

I will only be home for 3 days from September 26 through October 15. I love travel — it will be interesting to see how I do with just one functioning arm!

Talk very soon!

Big Hugs and lots of Appreciation,

Your Brain on Gluten: It's not a Pretty Picture!

I first got seriously interested in the devastating effects of gluten on brain and behavior almost a decade ago after listening to a recording of a talk by Dr. Thomas O’Bryan at a meeting of the International and American Association of Certified Clinical Nutritionists (IAACN).neurological effects of gluten

Before that, I was aware of the dangers of wheat and had taken myself and many patients off it with great results. Later, I developed a resource pack to help those wanting to free themselves:

Gluten-Free Survival Kit

Originally, many wheat-free enthusiasts still ate gluten in the form of kamut and spelt, including me. I would sprout kamut and make a delicious raw, dehydrated bread or pizza crust from it.

I didn’t notice negative effects unless I ate too much, but I did notice that once I started eating it, I craved more beyond satisfaction of my hunger.

After listening to Dr O’Bryan’s talk and doing extensive research of my own on the neurodevelopmental effects of gluten, I personally gave it up. I didn’t make a decision to give it up from my mind, though. It was a gut reaction and a loss of all desire for it. I had no cravings or remorse. I just stopped because once I understood the impact it had on me, I wanted no more of it.

There were several changes I did notice after giving up gluten entirely.

3 Tips for Correcting Fatigue and Exhaustion

You are going to encounter people suffering from adrenal fatigue ever day in your practice  They won’t necessarily come to you saying I have adrenal fatigue, although many sophisticated health seekers may.

The issues they will present with are fatigue, mid afternoon energy slump, brain fog, memory loss, hair loss and thinning, loss of libido and difficulty falling asleep. They won’t necessarily present with all of these, but usually several.

Your job as a holistic practitioner is to ask the right questions and make a correct assessment. Once you do, it’s a matter of coaching them about the diet, herbal, supplemental and lifestyle approaches that will rebuild their adrenals and restore their energy.

There are lots of herbs and nutrients that will help rebuild weakened adrenals.  The cornerstone is appropriate diet and lifestyle management.  Many practitioners simply prescribe adrenal herbal formulas without looking at the underlying cause of the adrenal burnout.

My top 3 strategies for restoring adrenal function include:

1. Identifying and correcting the underlying stress, whether its physical, emotional or related to tier diet . This needs to include an effective system of stress transforming, such as Hearth Math (www.heartmath.org).

2. Identifying and correcting blood sugar imbalance is an important step in restoring adrenal health.  I suggest you have your clients purchase an inexpensive blood sugar meter and test their sugars.  Cortisol, the stress hormone, raises blood sugar by breaking down muscles and lean body mass.  My B4 Be Gone program is the perfect solution for blood sugar imbalance, and my Insulin Resistance Practitioner Program teaches you as a health professional how to coach your clients to balanced sugar levels.

3. Removing dietary stressors, especially gluten, sugar and processed fats.  These disrupt digestion, cause inflammation and impair the absorption of key nutrients.

These are just a few of the strategies I share in my Correcting Adrenal Fatigue and Exhaustion (CAFE) program.  We just graduated our first 450 students from that program and it’s almost ready to be offered as a self-study.

Learn these strategies well.  Experience them for yourself so you can be a highly effective teacher.
