I still remember the moment my world changed. Losing my mother suddenly was a wake-up call that set me on the path I walk today. I don’t want anyone to accept that chronic disease, metabolic imbalance, and inflammation are just “normal parts of aging.” There is a better way—one focused on prevention and healing rather than reaction and medication.
That’s why I do what I do. It’s why I teach others that food is medicine, and every bite has the power to either harm or heal. It’s also why I’m always searching for ways to create delicious, functional foods that nourish the body, balance blood sugar, and keep hormones in harmony—without sacrificing taste or satisfaction.
That’s exactly what these green Flax Wraps do.
Here is a wrap that isn’t just a “healthy alternative”—it’s actually good. It is soft, flexible, flavorful, and packed with ingredients that support metabolic and cardiovascular health. This recipe is a staple in my kitchen because it’s not just gluten-free, dairy-free, and low glycemic—it’s also easily customized and loaded with fiber, healthy fats, and micronutrients that your body craves.
Use it for wrapping up fresh veggies, a not-tuna salad, or creamy avocado. This Flax Wrap is the perfect addition to a blood sugar-friendly, heart-healthy lifestyle.
What Are Flax Wraps Made Of?
These soft, flexible wraps are made with just a handful of whole food ingredients. The base is flax gel, a natural thickener made by soaking flax seeds in water. This gel binds the wrap together. Unlike store-bought options full of gums and starches, flax gel is a whole-food binder that supports digestion, hormones, and more.
Next, we add tomatillos which add a refreshing tang. Their slight acidity balances the richness of the flax and ensures the wrap doesn’t feel heavy. A handful of mild mixed greens adds minerals while keeping the flavor light and versatile.
For depth and warmth, fresh ginger is blended in for a gentle spicy kick that enhances the other ingredients without overpowering them. To round it all out, kelp powder, cayenne, and chipotle provide a savory, smoky finish, while a pinch of salt ties everything together.
The result? A nutrient-dense, delicious wrap that’s flexible, flavorful, and perfect for filling with your favorite ingredients.
How Do You Make Flax Wraps?
Making these wraps is as simple as blending, spreading, and dehydrating—no rolling pins or tricky dough!
It all starts with the flax gel which needs to be thick and smooth before blending in the other ingredients. Once the gel is ready, everything—ginger, tomatillos, greens, and spices—goes into a high-speed blender. The mixture transforms into a pourable batter that’s easy to spread onto a dehydrator sheet-lined dehydrator tray.
The real magic happens in the dehydrator. Unlike traditional baking which can dry out wraps too much and create inflammatory oils, the low-temperature drying process keeps them sturdy while warming the natural fats to too high a temperature.
After a few hours, the wraps firm up enough to flip for even drying while preserving all the nutrients and enzymes. The key is patience—letting them dry just long enough to hold their shape but keeping them soft and flexible.
Once done, you’re left with a perfectly pliable wrap, ready to be filled with your salads like this Brassica Slaw or this Spicy Walnut Dip and your favorite veggies.
How Do You Customize This Recipe?
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is to switch up the flavors!
- Mexican-Inspired Wraps – Add cumin, lime juice, some spicy peppers, and fresh cilantro for a zesty twist.
- Italian-Style Wraps – Mix in sun-dried tomatoes, basil, and oregano for a Mediterranean vibe.
- Extra Flavor Boost – Toss in sundried tomatoes, garlic, celery, or additional spices for even more depth.
You can use whatever vegetables you like. Experiment with veggies like zucchini, cauliflower, or squash. Throw in shredded carrots. You get to choose. Another great thing about this recipe, is you can taste it before you dehydrate it, so you can add more spices or flavorings to make sure it’s going to taste great.
No matter how you tweak it, this wrap is versatile, satisfying, and works beautifully with any meal.
How These Ingredients Support Blood Sugar, Heart Health, and Hormones
This simple blend is loaded with ingredients that support blood sugar balance, hormones, and metabolic health. Flax gel provides fiber and lignans that promote healthy estrogen metabolism and feed your gut microbiome. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and has blood sugar–stabilizing benefits, while tomatillos add vitamin C and detox-supportive compounds. Mixed greens add folate, magnesium, and chlorophyll to support adrenal health and energy production. Kelp gives an iodine boost needed for thyroid function and metabolic balance. And that little kick from cayenne and chipotle? It helps boost circulation, support digestion, and gently stimulate fat-burning.
Flax Seeds
Flaxseeds are rich in lignans which support hormone balance and are known for estrogen metabolism. They also provide soluble fiber which helps regulate blood sugar, improve gut health, and support a balanced microbiome. The omega-3 fatty acids in flax are anti-inflammatory and help protect the heart.
The number one health benefit of flax seeds is how it helps the heart. Flax seeds are high in lignans and alpha linoleic acid, ALA, which reduce inflammation, lower LDL cholesterol, and improve blood pressure.
Tomatillos
Tomatillos are naturally low in calories and sugar and a great blood sugar-friendly ingredient. They’re loaded with vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium which support the heart, metabolism, and immune function. Their slight acidity also helps enhance digestion and nutrient absorption.
Tomatillos are high in anti-cancer and anti-tumor phytochemicals called withanolides; as well as other antioxidants like beta carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Withanolides induce apoptosis and have been shown to shrink and dissolve tumors. They also enhance detox enzymes to help detoxify carcinogens.
Ginger
Ginger contains gingerols which have anti-inflammatory and blood sugar-regulating properties. It also aids digestion, supports gut motility, and reduces oxidative stress. It is most known for its ability to calm the digestive system.
Ginger is also beneficial in autoimmune cases. Looking at inflammation, ginger suppresses inflammatory pathways and inhibits COX1 and COX2 which reduces mediators of inflammation. It is also a great pain reliever acting like NSAIDS but without the harmful side effects. Ginger also helps regulate the immune response and reduces abnormal activation. It has also been shown to lower C-reactive protein (CRP).
Mixed Greens
Dark leafy greens provide minerals like magnesium, calcium, and iron needed to support thyroid health, energy production, and balanced cortisol levels. These minerals are essential for proper adrenal function and help reduce stress-related hormone imbalances.
Kelp Powder
Kelp is an excellent source of iodine needed in thyroid hormone production. A well-functioning thyroid is key to maintaining energy levels, metabolism, and hormone balance. Kelp is one of the richest sources of iodine.
Kelp also helps with cellular repair. Its flavonoids and polyphenols detoxify cells, lower inflammation, and are antioxidants. It also contains fucose, a sugar that signals cellular repair and regulates stem cell proliferation to encourage regeneration.
Spices (Cayenne & Chipotle)
Cayenne and chipotle contain capsaicin, a compound that supports circulation, boosts metabolism, and helps regulate insulin sensitivity. These spices also enhance digestion and add a beautiful depth of flavor.
By choosing whole, functional ingredients, this wrap is a gluten-free alternative—it’s a hormone-balancing, blood sugar-stabilizing powerhouse!
These gluten-free, dairy-free wraps are a nutrient-dense, blood sugar-friendly alternative to store-bought options. It’s a versatile, satisfying, and easy-to-make base for countless meals.
