A few years ago, a client sat across from me, frustration written all over her face. “Dr. Ritamarie,” she said, “I don’t feel like myself anymore. My energy is gone, my mood swings are constant, and my libido? Forget about it. I’ve tried every ‘miracle’ supplement, but nothing works. Is this just how it’s supposed to be now?”
Her story isn’t unique. Many people assume that a fading sex drive and waning energy are inevitable parts of aging. They’re often told by doctors, “That’s just how it is at this stage of life.” But what I’ve seen time and time again is that these issues are rarely about age—they’re about hormones.
Unfortunately, most people are focusing on the wrong hormones. While it’s easy to blame low testosterone or estrogen, the real saboteur is cortisol, the stress hormone. Chronic stress floods your system with cortisol, leaving your body exhausted, your mood unstable, and your libido stuck in low gear. To reignite that spark, you don’t need to boost more hormones, take a B12 shot or drink more caffeine; you need to calm the chaos and bring cortisol back into balance.
The good news? There are simple, natural ways to do just that. Imagine feeling vibrant, sexy, and full of energy—not because of a magic pill but because your body is in harmony. One of my favorite tools for achieving this is a delicious, nutrient-packed drink designed to lower cortisol, balance your hormones, and give your libido the boost it deserves.
This Kick-Start Your Libido Elixir is a perfect example of how the right ingredients can nourish your body, reduce stress, and help you feel like yourself again—vibrant, confident, and alive.

What Is the Kick-Start Your Libido Elixir Made Of?
This drink is all about balance and flavor, and it is gluten free and vegan. It starts with a robust herbal tea base—think Spring Dragon Longevity Tea, Egyptian Licorice, or even ginseng for their rejuvenating and adaptogenic benefits that help you to relax. From there, we add superfoods and functional foods like soaked nuts and seeds, almonds, pine nuts, and pumpkin seeds, which create a creamy texture and pack in healthy fats and minerals.
To bring it all together, there’s a touch of avocado for richness, arugula for nitric oxide, and warming spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and fennel. Superfood powders like cacao, maca, and ashwagandha give this drink an extra layer of energy and hormonal support. Sweeten it to taste with stevia or your preferred low-glycemic option, and if you’re feeling adventurous, toss in some fresh figs or berries for a fruity twist.
How Do You Make the Kick-Start Your Libido Elixir?
Making this concoction is as fun as drinking it! Start by steeping your tea—let those herbs work their magic and get nice and strong. Once it’s ready, toss the tea into a blender with all the other ingredients, from your creamy soaked nuts and seeds to the spices and superfood powders. Blend it up until it’s smooth and luscious.
Want it warm? Use the tea while it’s still hot. Craving a cooler drink? Let the tea cool first, add a couple of ice cubes to the blender, or pour the finished drink over crushed ice. Taste and adjust the sweetness or spices as you like—it’s your elixir, after all!
How Do You Customize This Recipe?
This elixir is endlessly versatile.
-
Switch up the greens: Don’t have arugula? Try spinach, kale, or even a pinch of powdered greens.
-
Play with flavors: Add warming spices like nutmeg or ginger for a seasonal twist, or swap vanilla for almond extract. Add a few drops of butterscotch or caramel from Medicine Flower’s collection of flavorings. You could even add a zesty zing with a squeeze of lemon or orange.
-
Boost the adaptogens: Experiment with reishi, tulsi, or cordyceps for extra hormonal support.
-
Extra creaminess: Use cashews or sunflower seeds in place of almonds for a richer texture.
-
Add more nitric oxide boosters: Add a little tart cherry powder, beet powder, or pomegranate powder.
No matter how you customize it, this drink will always deliver on flavor and nourishment.

How Do These Ingredients Help With Libido, Heart Health, and Hormones?
The Kick-Start Your Libido Elixir is a nutrient-packed blend of adaptogenic herbs, healthy fats, and superfoods to lower stress, regulate hormones, and enhance libido naturally. By calming cortisol levels, promoting testosterone and estrogen balance, and supporting energy production, this drink helps improve mood, reproductive health, and overall vitality. Perfect for men and women alike, it’s a delicious way to nourish your body and reignite your spark.
Raw Cacao
Raw cacao is a nutrient-dense ingredient that has been celebrated for centuries for its energizing and aphrodisiac properties. Cacao is rich in magnesium, a mineral for muscle relaxation, stress reduction, and hormone regulation. Magnesium also supports smooth muscle function, including blood vessels, which is essential for cardiovascular health and sexual function.
For women, cacao’s magnesium content is important during PMS, helping to relieve menstrual cramps and other symptoms. Its role in regulating stress-related hormones further contributes to a healthier hormonal profile and improved libido for both men and women.
The flavonoids in cacao are antioxidants that improve blood flow by enhancing nitric oxide production, leading to better circulation. For men, this can mean improved erectile function, while women experience better blood flow to their reproductive organs.
Cacao also contains precursors to feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin for mood regulation and stress reduction. Its tryptophan content supports serotonin production, while the consumption of cacao triggers the release of endorphins—natural mood lifters.
Cacao's effects on libido are supported by its ability to enhance pleasure, mood, and overall energy levels. The slight boost in testosterone production observed in some studies makes it particularly beneficial for men, promoting vitality, energy, and reproductive health.
Maca
Maca, often called “Peruvian ginseng,” is an adaptogenic root that works wonders for balancing hormones, boosting energy, and enhancing libido for both men and women.
One of maca’s key benefits is its support of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad (HPG) axis. These systems are the command centers of your endocrine system and coordinate the production of hormones that regulate everything from energy to reproductive health. Maca nourishes these areas and helps maintain hormonal balance which is especially beneficial for women during life transitions like menopause.
Maca is known for reducing uncomfortable symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings. Maca supports a more balanced hormonal profile by modulating estradiol and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels.
Maca isn’t just for women—it’s well-known for its aphrodisiac properties in both genders. While it doesn’t directly alter hormone levels, it has a profound impact on energy and mood which can reignite the spark in your personal life.
For those trying to conceive, maca nourishes the endocrine glands and supports hormone production needed for ovulation and sperm health. It helps create an environment conducive to conception.
Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are rich in essential nutrients like zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and phytoestrogens that promote hormonal balance and even offer benefits for libido and reproductive health.
Pumpkin seeds have the ability to help regulate estrogen levels, thanks to their lignan phytoestrogens. For women experiencing menopause or dealing with estrogen imbalances, these compounds can provide much-needed support by gently modulating hormone activity.
Pumpkin seeds are also rich in zinc. This essential mineral supports progesterone production, helping maintain hormonal balance throughout the menstrual cycle.
Pumpkin seeds contain beta-sitosterol which helps regulate insulin levels, improve cholesterol profiles, and potentially reduce excess androgen production. This can support a healthier hormonal environment and reduce some of the symptoms associated with PCOS(Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).
Pumpkin seeds’ phytoestrogens may also provide relief from menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats, helping women feel more balanced and comfortable during this transition.
Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha, a staple of Ayurvedic medicine, is a tonic that supports hormones and libido. Known scientifically as Withania somnifera, this adaptogen helps the body manage stress and balance reproductive hormones.
Ashwagandha helps to regulate cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels disrupt hormones like progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone. By calming the stress response, ashwagandha promotes hormonal equilibrium leading to better energy, mood, and reproductive health.
For those with thyroid imbalances, ashwagandha gives additional support by stimulating the production of thyroid hormones, T4 and T3, essential for metabolism, energy, and menstrual regularity. Its impact on the adrenal glands complements this, ensuring a balanced relationship between the thyroid and adrenals.
Ashwagandha also has a profound influence on reproductive hormones like luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). These hormones regulate ovulation and menstrual cycles. For women in perimenopause or menopause, its ability to modulate estrogen and progesterone can ease hot flashes, brain fog, and mood swings.
When it comes to libido, ashwagandha is helpful for both men and women. In women, it enhances sexual desire, arousal, and satisfaction, likely due to its relaxing and mood-boosting properties. In men, ashwagandha can boost testosterone levels and improve sexual performance, making it a natural choice for those experiencing low libido due to stress or hormonal imbalances. Its role in improving sperm quality further boosts its reputation as a fertility booster.
Avocado
Avocado has a rich profile of healthy fats, vitamins, and plant compounds. It’s rich in monounsaturated fats. These “good fats” are the building blocks of sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Without adequate healthy fats, your body can’t produce the hormones it needs to keep you feeling balanced and energized.
Avocados also support stable insulin levels. Insulin is a critical metabolic hormone, and keeping it balanced prevents disruptions to other hormones, supporting everything from energy levels to reproductive health.
For women, avocados provide phytoestrogens and plant sterols that may help regulate estrogen levels. This makes them beneficial during menopause or for those experiencing hormonal imbalances. The high folate content also supports fertility by promoting healthy ovulation and menstrual cycles, and some research even suggests that avocados may boost the success of fertility treatments like IVF.
When it comes to libido, avocados’ fats help promote testosterone production in both men and women which boosts sexual vitality and desire. By stabilizing blood sugar and reducing inflammation, avocados also enhance mood and reduce stress, two factors that play a role in maintaining a healthy libido.
Avocados are also packed with nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and vitamin B6, which support energy levels, muscle function, and even help with anxiety. Feeling energized and balanced naturally leads to a more vibrant libido and greater sexual satisfaction.
Arugula
Arugula has been celebrated as an aphrodisiac since ancient times. It has the ability to support testosterone production. Arugula is also rich in nutrients like zinc, magnesium, and potassium—key players in the production of sex hormones and overall reproductive health.
Arugula also supports nitric oxide production, improving blood flow and circulation. Better blood flow not only contributes to cardiovascular health but also enhances physical arousal and sexual function.
The antioxidants in arugula protect the body from environmental toxins that can disrupt hormones and dampen libido. These protective compounds work alongside its vitamins and minerals to promote balanced hormones and sustained energy—both critical for a healthy sex drive.
Cinnamon and Fennel
Cinnamon and fennel are two spices that bring not only warmth and flavor to your meals but also provide benefits for hormonal balance and libido.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is known for its ability to regulate blood sugar levels. By stabilizing glucose, cinnamon reduces the stress on your endocrine system, helping to maintain balance across key hormones like insulin, testosterone, and cortisol.
For men, cinnamon holds particular promise as a libido booster. It’s been shown to support testosterone levels, which are essential for sexual function and desire. By enhancing blood flow and nitric oxide levels, cinnamon also contributes to improved erectile function and increased blood flow to all reproductive organs.
Cinnamon is a natural aphrodisiac for both men and women, known to enhance sensory experiences and potentially increase arousal. It even has a role in fertility, with studies suggesting it can boost sperm production and motility.
Fennel
Fennel contains phytoestrogens that makes it particularly useful for women, helping to balance estrogen levels during hormonal transitions. Fennel may ease symptoms like hot flashes and support overall reproductive health.
Traditionally, fennel has been used as an aphrodisiac in various cultures. Its ability to improve digestion and reduce bloating is another bonus—after all, feeling good in your body can go a long way toward boosting energy and desire.
Together, these spices enhance digestion, promote circulation, and support a balanced hormonal environment.
Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto, derived from the berries of the Serenoa repens plant, is known for its ability to support hormonal balance and reproductive health. It is an ally for both men and women looking to address hormone-related challenges.
Saw palmetto has the ability to regulate testosterone levels. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Elevated DHT can contribute to hair loss, acne, and prostate issues in men and hormonal imbalances in women. By keeping DHT in check, saw palmetto helps maintain healthy testosterone levels and supports everything from energy to reproductive function.
For women, saw palmetto’s hormone-regulating effects extend to conditions like PCOS. By reducing androgen levels, it can help alleviate symptoms such as acne, excess hair growth (hirsutism), and irregular menstrual cycles. Saw palmetto’s ability to lower prolactin levels supports ovulation and improves fertility.
Saw palmetto’s role in preserving free testosterone levels directly supports libido in both men and women. Testosterone is a key hormone for sexual desire, and by preventing its conversion into DHT, saw palmetto ensures that the body retains the testosterone it needs for optimal sexual health.
In men, this translates to enhanced sperm production and overall reproductive function, while women may experience improved ovulation and egg quality. By addressing hormonal imbalances that often suppress libido, saw palmetto paves the way for a more vibrant and satisfying sex life.
If you’ve been feeling tired, stressed, or like your spark isn’t what it used to be, this drink is exactly what you need. It’s a simple, delicious way to help lower stress, balance hormones, and bring back that vibrant energy.
